Should Fatty Foods Be Avoided?

Should you avoid fatty foods? Fat-containing foods are needed to maintain good health. Functioning as a source of energy, fat helps the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K. Consuming fat can help protect the heart and blood vessels while reducing the risk of heart disease.

Food has two types of fat: saturated fat and unsaturated fat. They are often labeled as good fats and bad fats. It is recommended that you do not overconsume fat since excess unused fat is converted into body fat, which may lead to obesity. Avoid eating saturated fat in excess.

Saturated fats are mainly generated from animals in a form of poultry, red meat, animal fat, and high-fat dairy products like butter and cheese. Eating excessive fat can create clogs in the blood vessels and leads to insulin resistance. It can also increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

The known types of good fats are Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, both of which are polyunsaturated fatty acids that can be found in salmon and sardines.

On the other hand, monounsaturated fatty acids can be found in various foods and vegetable oils such as nuts, olive oil, peanut butter, and avocados.
