As a fermented food lover, I understand the importance of probiotics for our health. At times, I even consume special drinks containing probiotics to ensure that my colon has enough probiotics.
In Ayo-ma’s interview with food science expert Prof. Fransiska Zakaria Rungkat, I learned a surprising new fact; consuming probiotic-rich foods isn’t the only way to get probiotics. Oh wow.
Probiotics are microorganisms that are good for the health of their host, us humans. However, many probiotics do not survive oral ingestion because our stomach’s hydrochloric acid kills both harmful and beneficial microorganisms. Fortunately, there is another way for them to reach the gut—through the anus.
Regardless of how they enter, it’s essential to keep the probiotics alive. The key is to give them enough fiber or prebiotics so that they can grow and multiply properly. Fiber we eat from foods like vegetables, fruits, and nuts nourish these probiotic allies.
Let’s increase our consumption of prebiotic foods to support the survival and growth of the probiotics in our body.
