Stunting in Indonesia

Stunting in Indonesia

Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono revealed that Indonesia’s human resources face several challenges in preparing for the golden generation of 2045. Two significant issues are related to nutrition, particularly stunting. In 2022, the stunting rate was still at 22%, with a target to reduce it to 17%. By 2024, the goal is to further decrease the rate to 14%.

To achieve this target, the government intervenes during pregnancy by providing blood supplement tablets and ensuring adequate nutrition. For infants aged 6 to 24 months, interventions include administering PCV and rotavirus vaccines to protect against repeated infections. In 2023, nutritional support will be delivered through the Supplementary Food Program (PMT), utilizing locally sourced ingredients. The use of accessible local food items will facilitate the implementation of this program and help ensure it reaches the targeted areas.

The government also emphasizes the importance of counseling and educating the public about food and nutrition for children to prevent issues like the distribution of bagged coffee drinks. One way to achieve this is by revitalizing the role of Integrated Service Posts (Posyandu). The role of Posyandu are not limited to providing health services to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children; they can also serve as a frontline resource for early detection of stunting cases and educating the community to actively participate in the prevention and management of stunting.

Achieving the government’s goals and efforts for Indonesia 2045 requires the support of the entire community. Together, let us prepare our children to become the cornerstone of Indonesia’s golden age.
