Benefits of Moringa Leaves: From Warding Off Black Magic to Combating Malnutrition

Some of Ayoma’s friends reading this article may be aware that Moringa leaves are often considered a countermeasure against black magic. Those who still hold onto their ancestral beliefs use Moringa leaves to fend off ill fortune or prevent misfortune within their homes. This practice often extends to individuals who have been chronically ill without a clear diagnosis often believed to be victims of witchcraft or black magic. For example, in the film “Susuk” (2023) by Ginanti Rona, Moringa leaves are featured as a remedy for removing beauty charms (susuk).

Aside from their role in warding off susuk, Moringa leaves are widely utilized in Indonesian cuisine. Ayo-ma friends can try our take on the Sayur Bobor Daun Kelor recipe, which is available on our website.

According to a 2013 study on the traditional use of Moringa Oleifera (Daun Kelor) published in the International Journal of Phytotherapy Research, Moringa leaves contains 9 times more protein than yoghurt, 10 times more Vitamin A than carrots, and 15 times more potassium than bananas. Additionally, Moringa also has the following health benefits:

  1. High in antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that combat free radicals in the body. High levels of free radicals can cause oxidative stress, linked to chronic diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A study published by the National Library of Medicine found several antioxidant compounds in Moringa, including quercetin and chlorogenic acid.

  1. Nutrient-rich
About 20 grams of chopped moringa leaves, contain- 2 grams protein:

– 19% Vitamin B6
– 12% Vitamin C
– 11% Iron
– 11% Riboflavin (vitamin B2)
– 9% Vitamin A
– 8% Magnesium

  1. Anti-inflammatory properties

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to infection or injury. However, chronic inflammation can increase the risk of various health problems, such as heart disease and cancer. Moringa leaves contain isothiocyanates, which have anti-inflammatory effects, helping to relieve inflammation in the body.

  1. Eye Health

Moringa leaves contain phenolic compounds, flavonoids, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, tain, and lutein. These compounds are beneficial for maintaining eye health.

  1. Rich of Vitamin C

Moringa leaves are high in vitamin C, offering various health benefits. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that people with high levels of vitamin C in their blood have a lower risk of stroke.

Ayoma, my friends, the advantages of Moringa leaves reach far beyond mere mystical beliefs and minor health benefits. Moringa leaves offer tremendous overall health benefits. Don’t forget to give the Moringa Leaf Bobor Vegetable recipe a try and share your thoughts in the comments below.
