People often told me not to drink cold water because it would freeze the fat in my stomach. Concurring that the cold water would lower my body temperature, causing my body fat to freeze like ice, I believed what they said.
With the convenience of accessing information in today’s digital era, I searched online to verify the claim that drinking cold water leads to weight gain.
Consuming excess calories can lead to weight gain, whereas water, regardless of its temperature, does not contain calories and is not responsible for fat coagulation in the body.
When cold water is consumed, it adjusts its temperature to the body’s temperature, similar to how cold water in a room will adjust to the room temperature. According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the body requires 17 calories to heat 500ml of cold water to body temperature. Therefore, the statement that cold water can freeze belly fat is not accurate.
So, why do people think that consuming cold water makes you fat? This is likely due to the association of cold drinks with sweet flavors such as sugary syrups, ice cream, and sweetened iced tea. It is the excess sugar content in these beverages that contributes to weight gain, not the water temperature.
As females longing to weigh her ideal weight, it can be enticing to trust in hearsay about diets and other methods that claim to aid in weight loss. However, not all of this information is accurate making it imperative to cultivate a critical mindset when assessing information. It is advisable to seek information from trustworthy sources such as health journals, medical professionals, and other reliable sources.
Sweet cold drink lovers can still enjoy cold water by watching their sugar intake. As an alternative, try infused water which adds flavor to the water without adding any sugar content.
