Indigenous Spices of Indonesia

Indigenous Spices of Indonesia

Indonesia’s fertile soil hosts a diverse array of plants, each with a myriad of benefits. Among them are Indonesian spices, which have gained global recognition. According to the data from the Negeri Rempah Foundation, there are around 400-500 species of spices, with 275 of them found in Southeast Asia, dominated by Indonesia. It is no wonder Indonesia has earned the
title ‘Mother of Spices’.

In Indonesia about 25 types of spices are known to the public. Among them are turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, saffron, cardamom, kemukus, secang, and candlenut. There are also lemongrass, aromatic ginger, coriander leaves, coriander seeds, kluwek, galangal, star anise, pepper, vanilla, sichuan pepper, fennel, bay leaves, tamarind, and cumin.

Through the ‘Indonesia Spice Up the World’ program, the Indonesian government and stakeholders aim to promote Indonesian cuisine and spices internationally. The program targets 4,000 Indonesian restaurants abroad and an estimated total export value of Indonesian spices of up to US$2 billion.

As part of its efforts to safeguard Indonesian spices, the government issues Geographical Indication certificates. These certificates authenticate the origin of the spice as Indonesian and recognize its unique qualities.

Numerous Indonesian spices have been granted Geographical Indication certificates, including:
– Alor Islands Vanilla
– Koerintji Cinnamon
– Minahasa Cloves
– Moloku Kie Raha Clove
– Siau Nutmeg
– Banda Islands Nutmeg
– Muntok White Pepper
– Malonan Pepper Kutai Kartanegara East Kalimantan

Indonesia continues to be celebrated as a leading producer of high-quality spices, with many being exported globally. However, despite the abundance of spices, local appreciation for these valuable products has declined. Let’s show gratitude for Indonesia’s natural spice wealth by supporting local spice farmers through purchasing their products. This support will empower them to maintain Indonesia’s esteemed reputation for producing superior spices
