Why Do We Need Carbohydrates?

Why do we need carbohydrates? Humans utilize carbohydrates as the body’s main source of energy. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are digested faster and can be found in foods such as sugar and syrup. Complex carbohydrates are considered a better choice since they contain more nutrients for the body.

Simple carbohydrates provide short-term energy for the body and may cause a spike in glucose. This spike can lead to cravings for sweets. That is why simple carbohydrates are often considered a trigger for diabetes.

Option for carbohydrates that have high fiber content, such as brown rice, whole grain bread, and beans. The fiber in carbohydrates can reduce the risk of constipation and cholesterol.

Examples of nutritious carbohydrates for our families to consume include corn, potatoes, cassava, sweet potato, sago starch congee, bread, rice, pasta, grains, and beans.
